Wildflowers

Every new day there’s another disaster
If things get dry we’ll just make one up
From the outstretched hand of your former master
To the flashing lights at the corner shop.

From the uncontrolled to the uncontrollable
We sit in rows of green plastic chairs
From the slow beating heart of the inconsolable
To young lovers, so unprepared.

We’re wildflowers sold in packets
We’re neon lights in the countryside
We’re peace talks wearing Army jackets
Look half dead but we’re still alive

Every new day there’s a new solution
Somebody’s born and somebody dies
From the iron fist to the revolution
Some look to the earth, some look to the sky

From out pedestals to our prison cells
Computer screens to fountain pens
We perpetuate the lie we tell
It’s you and me, it’s us and them

We’re wildflowers sold in packets
we’re grass growing through paving stones
We’re peace talks wearing Army jackets
We’re all one so we feel alone

If you were born in someone else’s shoes
Would you be them or would they be you?
