British Bands Medley

I put together this medley of British music over the last 45 years.

It’s the sort of thing that could do well on YouTube, which is why I did it. I’ve never really made a video with that in mind before, but I need to increase my audience if I’m going to live off music and this seems a good way to do it while still doing something enjoyable. Of course it’ll probably end up doing no better than my other videos! But never mind, it’s worth a try.

The inevitable barrage of comments telling me bands I’ve missed has included David Bowie, Coldplay, Sex Pistols, The Verve, Roxy Music, Nick Drake, Joy Division, New Order, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Massive Attack, Mumford and Sons, Yardbirds, The XX, Art Brut, The Maccabees, Kaiser Chiefs, The Kooks, Air Traffic, Bloc Party, Friendly Fires, Joy Division, The Stranglers, Muse, Buzzcocks, Suede, “Scottish Music” and Chameleon Circuit. Though I think/hope that last one was a joke.

So clearly, you can’t please everybody! Or you could but the song would be measured in hours rather than minutes. Some of those I agree could have been in there, others… Definitely not! But in the end I chose based on a mixture of popularity and importance to British music and also personal preference. Bowie is the most common question mark in the comments, and I know he could easily have been in there, but I’ve never really been into him. It’s not that I don’t like his music, I’ve just never got around to spending some time with his albums. So it’s by no means supposed to represent a definitive list. All the bands had to be important to me as well as to music. Also I probably forgot some. I have iTunes on shuffle and it’s already reminded me I missed Eric Clapton.

Anyway, I tried to keep it to four bands per decade (I thought The Stone Roses song was from their ’89 album!) and I’m pretty happy with it overall.

Hope you like it, if so please share it with your friends!

p.s. You can download an mp3 of the medley here.

  3. You’ll just have to do another one with the important ones you missed!

I really liked your “Karma Police,” I wanted to hear more. Also you looked like you were trying not to smile too much during “Lola,” which makes sense considering the subject matter.

  4. Hey. I have no idea if you ever read this or not, and I know it doesn’t really matter cause you get tons of other comments all the time, so mine is just gonna get lost among them, but I really wanted to tell you how happy this video made me. It is so hard to express something like this in a little comment box and that’s why I don’t usually leave comments, cause there are so many words people just scatter around the internet these days that they are starting to lose their meaning. But it’s Christmas time. And this video was a lovely Christmas gift for a lot of people, I’m sure.
I guess now I’m gonna repeat a sentence everyone is telling you nonstop but here it is: you are very talented. And this video is 10 minutes of amazingness. I don’t care if people say they miss songs from it or anything like that, I cannot believe that’s the first thing they say. I found this video magical from the beginning to the very end and you included songs I could die for. (when you got to the Libertines, I felt so happy it’s actually ridiculous) This whole thing is such a huge achievement and a wonderful inspiration. I’m always amazed by people who can inspire others. That’s the greatest thing one can do in the world, really. So yeah… I’m really happy you’ve chosen this instead of mathematics. The world needs more people like you.

Merry Christmas. And many thanks for reading this, if you did.

    • Thanks! I know what you mean about there being so many words on the internet that it all starts to lose meaning, so I always appreciate it when someone takes a little extra time to write something with some substance. The Internet needs more people like you!

      Merry Christmas!
      Dave. x
