Y Factor

If youre wondering what has become of Y Factor, I have changed it’s name and moved it to my new Scratch That Records blog. It’s now called Scratch That Recommends (see what I did there?) and won’t be limited to albums.

Check out the first post here. And let me know what you think either on tumblr by reblogging, or twitter using the hashtag #STRecs. I hope you’ll follow the new blog – if you have tumblr you can do that here, if not you can follow on twitter or facebook where I’ll link all the articles, or add http://www.blog.scratchthatrecords.com/rss to your RSS reader of choice.

ACE

Free Covers Album

For reasons outlined in the video below, I’ve put together a collection of my covers. It’s free to download so if you don’t have the songs, please do! It would also be wonderful if you could think of one friend who would like my music and send them a message letting them know about it, including the link - http://tinyurl.com/blueskiescovers – so they can get started.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You’re ace.

Here’s the video:

Kiva

I’ve decided to set up a charitable arm of Scratch That Records. Obviously the label is only small and doesn’t make much money, so we’re not gonna save the world in the next year, but still – it’ll be something, and moving forward it’ll be good to have it all set up.

I’ve decided to send the money through kiva.org, having seen John Green discuss it on YouTube. The idea is that you loan money (interest free) to entrepreneurs who want to set up a business but don’t have access to finance. Once their business is going, they pay the money back and you can lend it out again. I think this is a good fit for a small business, and will let a relatively small amount of money go a long way over time. Plus being Internet based it’s good to be able to lend money all over the world.

To start up the fund I’ll be using 25% of all sales from scratchthatrecords.com, the Blue Skies bandcamp page and my adsense (advertising on my youtube videos) in the month of December.

Obviously there’s nothing there yet, but come January you’ll be able to see all the people we’re lending to by going here, and perhaps I’ll get you guys to suggest where our money should go next.

p.s. The time of year may be partly responsible for this, so to help you get on board here’s a picture of our tree. There are more if you click through.

Stories from Somewhere

Four months ago I told my friend PJ that he should write some songs because he’d be good at it, then two weeks ago he sent me a load of songs.

Those songs have been put together and now form PJ’s debut album Stories from Somewhere, which I’m selling for him on Scratch That Records. It’s all very exciting!

It’s full of cool crazy stories and little glimpses inside PJ’s head, which you’ll be familiar with if you’ve watched his videos.

So get on over to scratchthatrecords.com! There’s even a bloody DEAL where you can get it with my latest album and save some pounds. You can also download  from bandcamp or itunes if you’re into that, and you can listen to the whole thing below.

Enjoy!

Y Factor!

I’m not a fan of the X Factor. I try not to bitch about it because obviously a lot of people do like it, and who am I to say they’re all wrong? (They are).

So I’ve come up with an idea – every week, when the X factor starts, I’m going to turn the TV off and listen to a really good album. Something to remind me that brilliant music does exist, even if most people choose to ignore it. And you’re all invited to join me! I figure we can all hit play at the same time and chat about it online, or if you’d prefer to listen with no distractions you can ignore that part… I mean you can do whatever you want – I’m not your boss!

But for those who do want to talk, we’ll use the hashtag #YFactor on twitter / tumblr. I’m assuming it’ll be fairly small tonight, given the short notice, but since this is a weekly thing I’m hoping it’ll grow over time – might be a good way to meet new people, find new music, grow as a person, whatever.

As for what the albums will be, for the first couple of weeks I’m just gonna choose some of my favourites, once things get going I’ll try some different things – guest editors, voting… Stuff like that. I have a few ideas that we can try out, but we’ll get to those in time. For now I’m going to introduce you to our first album!

*drum roll*

BLUE SKIES – WINTER!

No, that was a funny joke.

*another drum roll*

Trying to pick a favourite album is obviously ridiculous, but in recent years this has always been on my list of contenders. Last.fm tells me it’s the album I’ve listened to more than any other, so it seems like a good place to start. The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats is a collection of the most intimate of John Darnielle’s songs, all of them drawing inspiration from his troubled childhood. I’m not gonna get into a review here, you can make your own mind up!

If you don’t own it, you can stream it from grooveshark for free.

Kick off will be at 8:05, to give people time to finish watching Doctor Who and get a cup of tea.

I’m going to run things from my @STRecords twitter account (since I hardly use it for anything else!) so follow that if you want to know what’s happening.

I’ll also be chatting on my twitter / tumblr / facebook if you’re interested!

Winter – Out Now!

That’s pretty much all of my news!

Here, listen! Press play!

I’m well excited to hear what people think because I really like this one. You can get the CD from Scratch That Records or download it from itunes or bandcamp.

For people who don’t have the old albums, I’ve put up a deal on the back catalogue at STR so you can get them all (either CDs or downloads) for cheaper than buying them separately.

Thanks so much to everyone that has bought it already through the pre-order, or anything I’ve released in the past. I don’t say it much because it’s such a horrible cliché, but I genuinely wouldn’t still be putting music out if you guys weren’t supporting me. I’m so rubbish at selling myself, I tend to just put albums out there and hope people buy them while I write the next one! Most bands are like ‘Sell sell sell! Promote promote promote!’ for six months after each release, but I just can’t do it. I rely on you guys to help spread the word, and I rely on people buying albums because they like the music and want to help support the musician, rather than because they were told to a million times and finally caved!

Anyway, I’m gonna wrap this up before it turns into an Oscar speech; I hope you like the album. I’d like to thank my parents, the director, the producers, John, Conor, Elliott… Oh shit.

p.s. Thought I might attempt a blog.tv show tonight to celebrate. Keep an eye on twitter!
